Located on the southern border of Knights Valley, about 5 miles north of the city of Calistoga on Highway 128, Vena Vineyards is a 25-acre vineyard planted with Bordeaux varietals Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc. In 1994, as he was searching for a vineyard to purchase, Sam Vena was drawn to this beautiful valley, framed by the Mayacamas Mountains, with the stunning vista of Mt. St. Helena rising majestically in the foreground.
Sam saw an opportunity with this young vineyard, at the time just five years old, to cultivate world-class grapes. Knights Valley is the warmest of the Sonoma County wine appellations. The marine influence from the nearby Pacific Ocean results in warm days and cool nights - the perfect climate for growing Bordeaux-style grapes. In addition, Knights Valley has rocky, volcanic soils that "make the grapes struggle." It is this struggle that results in smaller, more intensely flavored grapes. Sam knew that in this beautiful spot, he had all the elements to create truly exceptional wines.
For the past 18 years, Sam and our vineyard manager, Tony Mitchell, have worked on continuously improving the quality of our grapes. They know grape characteristics and yield down to the individual row. It is this depth of knowledge and attention to detail, combined with a constant striving for excellence, that in past years has resulted in Vena Vineyards grapes being sold to some of the most prestigious wine labels in California.
In 2009, we decided it was time to bring to fruition our family's long held dream to create wines that reflected all of the care, dedication and craftsmanship that has been poured into our vineyards over the years. We are very proud of what we have created and we look forward to sharing our wines with family, friends and customers everywhere.
